Weaving tradition: a palm braiding event in Pezzolo

On Friday, April 11 in our home village of Pezzolo, folks from across the village gathered for a special event led by Giuseppe La Fauci, who introduced us to the art of palm weaving—a cherished Sicilian tradition practiced in anticipation of Palm Sunday. These woven palms are not only used in church processions but are also commonly displayed in Sicilian homes year-round as symbols of blessing and protection.

Old and young gathered in the Sala of S. Maria as Giuseppe guided us through weaving crosses, baskets, and braids out of the palms, and even more elaborate creations like roses.

Palm weaving is a tradition deeply rooted in Sicilian culture, passed down through generations. However, the practice is becoming less common today. By coming together to learn and share this art, we hope to keep this meaningful tradition alive.
