This program is designed for university students who are interested in gaining hands-on experience and one-to-one mentorship as either an Assistant Director (supporting a theatrical production from a creative and logistical perspective) or Company Manager (an often-overlooked but essential career path in the arts and nonprofit world).

This training unfolds while in deep immersion, during a month-long supported stay in a small, rural village in Sicily. Students will put their new skills to use as they engage with the local community and support a company of international artists-in-residence during the Trinacria Festival Residency. They will also assist with the production needs of the annual Trinacria Arts Festival.

This program is an opportunity to deepen your skills, experience an authentic slice of life in Sicily, and open the door on a possible new career trajectory. The training is designed to benefit not only those in performing arts or Italian studies, but also in fields such as hospitality, community engagement or organizing, cultural programming, human resources, psychology, nonprofit administration, or social justice.

We are particularly keen to provide this opportunity for BIPOC students and others that have been historically underrepresented in both Italian studies and the performing arts industry.

Since 2022, the program has been proudly presented in partnership with the Brandeis University Interdepartmental Program in Italian Studies, which provides scholarships for eligible Brandeis students studying Italian.

This program offers students the opportunity to serve as either a Company Manager or Assistant Director during the Trinacria Festival Residency.

Company Managers act as “R.A.s for artists,” handling hospitality, safety, logistics, and wellbeing, including communication, scheduling, transportation, meals, and expenses.

Assistant Directors support the director by assisting with blocking, note-taking, maintaining the production vision, and ensuring efficient rehearsals.

Before the residency, participants complete professional training with Artistic Director Mariagrazia La Fauci and Brandeis alum Iyvon E., along with training in CPR, mental health first aid, and anti-racism.

They then travel to Sicily with Trinacria Theatre Company for 3–4 weeks, arriving early for on-site preparation and staying briefly after for wrap-up. Throughout, they execute their roles, develop leadership and management skills, and engage with international artists and the local Sicilian community.

Iyvon and Mariagrazia provide 1-to-1 mentorship, and participants conclude with an essay or presentation on their experience. They also take part in Festival events, which in the past have included performances, workshops, games, concerts, and community activities.

PLEASE NOTE: For 2026, only the Company Management track will be offered.
