Coinvolgimento della comunità

Community engagement

DSC_5928.jpg

Sicily has given so much to us. Wherever possible, we want to return the favor. Sharing our skills with the communities we work with is a big part of what we do. In the past, we’ve offered workshops, courses, storytelling circles, community discussions, rock-painting, capture the flag, and more! We have created opportunities for Sicilian teenagers to gain valuable work experience as volunteers and interns. Our recent Theatre Creation Workshops for children and teens which we offered in Sicily in 2018 and 2019 were a huge success.

Are you interested in having Trinacria host a workshop or community event for your organization? Let us know by emailing info@trinacriatheatre.com.

Collaboration

We learn so much from the communities we work in. In 2018 our international artists in Sicily collaborated with Milazzo-based mask creator Nino Pracanica, as well as Esostheatre, a Messina-based contemporary theatre group specializing in devised and musical theatre. This is just one example of how the places we work fuel our continuous artistic growth - both as a company and as individuals.

documentary series: san placido Calonerò

For the duration of our 2016 residency, the historic Benedictine monastery at San Placido Calonerò served as the company's home base as well as an important performance location and a critical connection to the local community. In this three part series, we documented the work undertaken by two key institutions located within the monastery's dignified walls: The Enoteca Provinciale Messina and the P. Cuppari Agricultural Institute, a branch of Messina's G. Minutoli Higher Education Institute.

Chapter 1 focuses on the history of San Placido Calonerò, an important piece of Renaissance architecture in Sicily. Throughout its history, this beautiful structure has been a castle, a Benedictine monastery, a site of visit for a Holy Roman Emperor, a high school dedicated to the cultivation of Sicily's natural agricultural resources, and the place that Trinacria Theatre Company members called home for four weeks in 2016.

Chapter 2 focuses on the Enoteca Provinciale Messina, a network of connected enoteca (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enoteca) throughout Messina that promote the "territorial excellence" of the region - specifically, the gastronomic products that this beautiful land naturally offers. During our 2016 trip we visited their locations in Mirto, Naso, and of course spent plenty of time in the branch at our home base at San Placido Calonerò. The San Placido Enoteca is made up of a food and wine museum which chronicles the long history of agricultural production in the area. It's also home to a winery producing the very high quality Cuppari San Placido Faro D.O.C. wine, using grapes from the surrounding vineyards.

The monastery today represents more than just a beautiful place to connect to Messina's past. It is a dynamic center for education, industry, agriculture, and tourism in the modern day. The Enoteca Provinciale Messina and the P. Cuppari Agricultural Institute of G. Minutoli Messina work together to serve the interests of the local community and ensure a vibrant future for the region. San Placido Calonerò truly manifests Trinacria's mission of "creating culture, honoring heritage." We are proud to call it our 2016 home!

A community at the intersection of ancient and contemporary.
