About the project | Il progetto

On an island where the tensions between native and newcomers run high, a seed of love is planted that may just break the cycle of the seasons. The Hades & Persephone Project leads audiences down to the Underworld and back again in a centuries-long journey through love and violence, myth and truth, life and death, flowering and withering.

Devised by a team of international artists, The Hades & Persephone Project uses three myths of interracial romance as its starting point, each of which have left an indelible mark on Sicilian culture: Hades & Persephone (as told in Ovid’s Metamorphoses), Mata & Grifone (a popular Sicilian folklegend), and Lisabetta & Lorenzo (a tale from Boccaccio’s The Decameron). The production explores the connective tissue between these echoing tales of forbidden love.

Trinacria uses its signature blend of community engagement and physical theatre to tell deeply personal, local stories for global audiences. The Hades & Persephone Project is a new theatrical work devised and created collaboratively with the Sicilian community whose myths inspired the piece. The performance combines imaginative physical storytelling, minimal technical elements, and music to lead audiences through a powerful, poignant melding of myths.

The Hades & Persephone Project accompagna il pubblico in un viaggio verso gli Inferi e ritorno — un percorso lungo secoli attraverso l’amore e la violenza, il mito e la verità, la vita e la morte, la fioritura e l’appassire.

Ideato da un gruppo internazionale di artisti, The Hades & Persephone Project prende avvio da tre miti di amori interrazziali che hanno lasciato un segno indelebile nella cultura siciliana: Ade e Persefone (raccontato nelle Metamorfosi di Ovidio), Mata e Grifone (una popolare leggenda siciliana), e Lisabetta e Lorenzo (una novella dal Decameron di Boccaccio). Lo spettacolo esplora i legami profondi tra questi racconti che riecheggiano l’uno nell’altro come variazioni di uno stesso mito d’amore proibito.

Trinacria unisce il proprio approccio caratteristico di coinvolgimento comunitario e teatro fisico per raccontare storie locali e profondamente umane, destinate a un pubblico globale. Work on The Hades & Persephone Project began in London in early 2019 with the support of CLF Art Café in Peckham.

Development continued during Trinacria’s 2019 Artist Residency in Pezzolo, Sicily which focused exclusively on the Hades & Persephone myth. At the conclusion of the residency, a work-in-progress sharing was presented at the Villa Melania Cultural reFactory in Pistunina, Messina at sunset on August 4th as the final performance of their inaugural season.
Lo sviluppo è poi proseguito durante la Residenza d’Artista 2019 di Trinacria a Pezzolo (Messina), dedicata interamente al mito di Ade e Persefone. Al termine della residenza, il 4 agosto 2019, una presentazione work-in-progress è stata presentata al Villa Melania Cultural reFactory di Pistunina, Messina, al tramonto, come evento conclusivo della stagione inaugurale.

In early 2020, The Hades & Persephone Project received public funding from the National Lottery Project Grant through The Arts Council of England. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was postponed to July 2021. This R&D and workshop was performed at the Drayton Arms Theatre in London and presented in partnership with COMITES Londra, The Italian Cultural Institute of London, The British-Italian Society and The Italian Bookshop.
Nella primavera 2020, The Hades & Persephone Project ha ricevuto finanziamenti pubblici dal National Lottery Project Grant attraverso l’Arts Council of England. A causa della pandemia di COVID-19, il progetto è stato rinviato a luglio 2021. The project finally comes full-circle with a full production in Pezzolo as part of the 2023 Trinacria Arts Festival. This itinerant production leads audiences not only a journey through time and myth, but also on a journey through the streets of Pezzolo - beginning at the soccer field and ending at the church piazza, with three different routes that can be taken to connect the beginning and ending points. The show also features three potential endings, chosen at random each evening.
Il progetto giunge finalmente a compimento con una produzione completa a Pezzolo, presentata nell’ambito del Trinacria Arts Festival 2023. Questa produzione itinerante accompagna il pubblico non solo in un viaggio attraverso il tempo e il mito, ma anche tra le vie di Pezzolo — iniziando dal campo sportivo e concludendosi nella piazza della chiesa, con tre diversi percorsi che collegano i punti di partenza e di arrivo. Lo spettacolo presenta inoltre tre possibili finali, scelti a caso ogni sera.
